Nurse endorses Gerdes in District 1 council primary
ST. PETERSBURG -- Herb Polson says he won't endorse any of the three candidates vying for his District 1 City Council seat until after Tuesday's primary.
But his colleague on the council, Karl Nurse, can't wait that long.
The Charlie Gerdes campaign announced Thursday that Nurse was endorsing him. Gerdes, a attorney, is a Democrat. So is Nurse.
But that's not why Nurse is recommending him in the non-partisan race, he said.
"He's bright, he's been involved in the community for a long time, and he has a can-do style," Nurse said.
What about his opponents, Josh Shulman, a financial consultant and registered Democrat, and former Council member Robert Kersteen?
Shulman is smart and one day will get elected, Nurse said. At 35 and in his first race, however, he's not ready.
Kersteen, at 74, is too old, Nurse suggested.
"It's useful in this case to have someone in that position be about 20 years younger," Nurse said.
Gerdes is 54.
