Orlando antitax crusader may fight Hillsborough transit initiative
TAMPA -- Doug Guetzloe, founder of the Orlando-based group Ax the Tax, says he may play a role in opposing a 1-cent sales tax hike in Hillsborough to pay for new transit, roads and buses.
Guetzloe, a Tampa native who has a political consulting business and his own conservative talk radio show, has fought several tax initiatives around the state, particularly in and around Orange County. He was a leading critic of the controversial SunRail proposal in Orlando, conversion of CSX freight lines to a commuter system.
Guetzloe told the Times that he has been consulted by would-be opponents of a vote to raise the sales tax to 8 cents. He said he may put in an appearance Wednesday when commissioners meet to consider a resolution saying they intend to put the issue on the November 2010 ballot.
"I may very well saunter over," he said.
