Parting thoughts from Hillsborough Dems vice chair Chris Brown
Hillsborough County Democratic Party vice chair Chris Brown is leaving Florida next month and heading to law school at UC- Berkeley. BayBuzz asked Brown for some parting thoughts, after serving for more than a year and a half as a party officer.
"My major issue with the local party is, I guess, the same with every Democratic party. It's really that lack of cohesion and message," he said. "We don't really coordinate well with our caucuses, particulary our Black caucus and our Hispanic caucus." That's especially disappointing, he said, given the momentum built during the 2008 presidential election. New Democratic voters weren't "pulled into the fold," he said. "Who knows what impact they would have if we had done more to connect with them." Brown, who is part African-American and part Puerto Rican, speculates that the problem in Florida might be that the Democrats are simply outnumbered among elected officials.Another possible factor: Differing positions on social issues, with at least the African-American caucus generally being more conservative than the party as a whole. Charges of racism, though, are illegitimate, he said, noting that no party is more sympathetic to the plight of minorities than Democrats.
Brown will continue following Florida politics in California with his website www.exposetheright.com.
