Pasco budget will keep tax rate the same
In a mailing to voters, Pasco County Commission Chairman Ted Schrader recently bally-hooed the board's annual cuts to the property tax rate for seven straight years.
So much for that fanfare.
Pasco County budget officials plan to keep the property tax rate the same when the 2008-09 budget is unveiled on Tuesday, the first time it won't go down since a 2000 increase.
Why? An increase was unpalatable with three of the five commissioners seeking re-election. A decrease was unlikely because mandated tax cuts from Amendment 1. Even with keeping the same rate, tax revenue will decrease roughly $17-million for 2009.
"At least for me, it won't be a tax increase," said Schrader, who faces John Nicolette in closely watched Republican primary Aug. 26.
