Pasco commissioners bid farewell to longtime growth management chief
NEW PORT RICHEY -- Thirty-one years ago, Sam Steffey was a planner for Pasco County. He worked his way up the ladder and helped Pasco write its first comprehensive plan. Today, he said goodbye.
Steffey got a standing ovation after commissioners approved a resolution congratulating him on his retirement.
"You literally wrote the plan for Pasco County," Commissioner Ann Hildebrand said. "We're going to miss the heck out of you."
Steffey, who normally says plenty at meetings, today found it difficult to say much.
He thanked his fellow county employees, as well as board members, whom he has worked with since they took office.
"I've been with you since you since your first terms, and I'm still with you."
Steffey is being replaced by Richard E. Gehring, a former city manager in Pinellas and a developer.
