Pinellas Commissioner Norm Roche could run in another district in 2014
There’s no doubt that State Rep. Ed Hooper plans to run for the District 2 at-large seat on the Pinellas County Commission in 2014, but exactly who he’ll run against could end up being a question mark.
The seat’s current occupant, Commissioner Norm Roche, says he has put his Clearwater home on the market. And according to an email, he’s "eyeing a place in the East Lake area." In case you’re wondering, no, East Lake is not within his district's boundaries.
"I’m considering running in another District," he wrote in an email to the Times, but "nothing is definite."
If Roche does move to East Lake, he could end up buying in District 4, which Commissioner Susan Latvala has held onto since her election in 2000. A Roche v. Latvala showdown could be explosive…or it could never happen.
If a term limits lawsuit, which is slowly winding its way through the courts, results in a decision that bars Latvala from running in District 4 again, then Roche could wind up running for an open seat. Latvala is one of four commissioners named in that suit, which also names Commissioners Ken Welch, Karen Seel, and John Morroni. Should they lose the case, Roche would have his choice of open seats to pick from. Just depends where he wants to buy.
