Pinellas County Commissioner Morroni has cancer
Pinellas County Commissioner John Morroni, 53, has been diagnosed with cancer.
According to county officials, he was admitted to the hospital last week with abdominal pains. The diagnosis was lymphoma. Officials said he was released last night, and tests are under way to determine a course of treatment.
County Commissioner Susan Latvala said Morroni was watching the presidential debate on television last Friday when he felt a crippling pain in his stomach and went to the hospital. A physical six weeks ago, Latvala said, indicated Morroni was in fine health.
Latvala said Morroni's cancer is highly treatable, and he's expected to fully recover.
"John and his family are in all of our thoughts and prayers, and we wish him a very speedy recovery," she said.
A former State Representative, Morroni was elected to the commission in 2000. He has two years left on his current term.
