Pinellas party chairmen uncertain about futures

Pinellas County Democratic Party Chairman Ramsay McLauchlan and County Republican Party Chairman Jay Beyrouti said Monday they both may not seek re-election after their terms expire this year.

McLauchlan, whose departure was suggested recently by saintpetersblog.com, said he has not decided what he will do.

"I have not 100 percent made up my mind. The reality is it’s a lot, a lot, of work. I have family and other commitments," he said.

McLauchlan also said there's "some strategy involved." He told some people he may not seek another term to see how people reacted and see whether other would-be chairmen stepped up "if I did all of a sudden announce I’m not running, people wouldn’t be altogether shocked about it."

Beyrouti said he also is considering not seeking another term. One reason: He's interested in running for state Rep. Jim Frishe's seat in 2012, when retirements and term limits could shuffle the lineup of Republicans seeking office.

"This is a possibility," said Beyrouti.

After a financially bumpy 2009, Beyrouti has escalated the party fundraising beyond $322,000 for this cycle. Meanwhile, McLauchlan has stabilized a historically fractured Democratic Party, but still remains well behind the GOP with $68,000 raised for the cycle.
