Pinellas, Pasco officials ponder tax for light rail, bus service
Some Pinellas County officials have begun pushing for a tax increase to pay for light rail and more bus service - similar to a 1-cent sales tax hike proposed for a referendum in Hillsborough County.
Legally, Pasco County can't do a referendum. But Pasco County Commisisoner Ann Hildebrand said one option could come in four years. That's when the Penny for Pasco 1-cent sales tax would end its 10-year run.
Then Pasco could ask voters to approve its share of mass transit upgrades, which could include running into Wesley Chapel, said Hildebrand, a member of the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority.
"I don’t know if there would be an appetite to do that right now, as we’re half way through the penny term," Hildebrand said.
