PolitiFact Florida: Bob Buckhorn's campaign promise to coordinate waterfront development

PolitiFact Florida recently reviewed all of the campaign promises of Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn as he marked his first year in office on April 1. One of the things he pledged was to coordinate waterfront development, a campaign promise we've rated In the Works.

That coordination is taking place through an ongoing effort facilitated by the Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit education and research group based in Washington, D.C.

Since October, the institute has twice sent groups of experts on real estate development, urban planning, development and related fields to Tampa.

One of the recommendations: moving out tenants and demolishing the 682 apartments of the aging North Boulevard Homes public housing complex to create a 40-acre riverfront site for mixed-use, mixed-income development.
