Ready to look ahead to 2012 elections?
Let's switch gears for a moment from Tampa city elections to the 2012 elections. Even with this year's mayoral and some City Council races going into a March 22 runoff election, prospective Hillsborough county officials already have an eye on next November.
Six local candidates have already filed paperwork with the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections for the November 2012 cycle: Jackie Beiro, a Democrat for supervisor of elections; Julianne De Priest and Willie Lee Lawson, both Republicans for District 3 County Commissioner; Kevin Beckner, a Democrat for District 6 County Commissioner; and Cynthia L. Stuart in District 3 for the Hillsborough School Board.
Lawson, 50, kicks off his campaign for County Commission today, despite the mayoral race's lingering hold on voters' attention.
"County Commission races have a very short amount of time to be special," he said, before presidential candidates steal the spotlight.
In 2012, Hillsborough County residents will elect the Clerk of the Circuit Court, Sheriff, Property Appraiser, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. They will also vote for County Commissioners in Districts 1 , 2, 3, 4 and 6 (Districts 2 and 4 will be elected two-year terms). School Board candidates in Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7 will also be up for election.
