Rice crosses petition threshold to make Pinellas ballot

Republican Everett Rice, seeking to return to power as sheriff, crossed theshold needed to qualify by petition, turning in 6,714 signatures to make the ballot. He needed 6,050.

Rice is so far the only sheriff candidate to turn in enough petitions to make the ballot, based on a Jan. 18 list compiled by the Supervisor of Elections Office.

He's running in a crowded, expensive primary campaign that includes recently minted Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who also is a Republican.
