Sandy Murman mailer labels John Dingfelder a "tax and spend liberal"
Republican Sandy Murman, a candidate for the District 1 Hillsborough County Commissions seat, has a new mailer that tags Democratic opponent John Dingfelder as a "tax and spend liberal." It shows a picture of an adorable dog and reads: "Meet Rocky, the All-American dog .. and just about the only thing John Dingfelder hasn't managed to tax." Among other things, the piece features newspaper headlines about fee increases during the nearly eight years Dingfelder served on the council, and his proposal for a $1 a month fee to fund the parks and recreation department, an idea rejected by fellow council members. Murman, who has said as a commissioner she would cut regulations to make it easier to launch businesses, also makes hay in the mailer of Dingfelder's opposition to ordinances that would give preference to local businesses in city and county contracting. Here's Dingfelder's response to the piece: "The only fees we ever raised was to repair our crumbling infrastructure. I'm confident the votes will see through the empty partisan rhetoric. I'm in office to do positive things and that's what I've done over the last eight years." In 2006 Dingfelder was one of four council members who voted to lower the city's property tax rate. Then-council member Linda Saul-Sena, a Democrat who's also now running for county commission, voted against that tax cut.
