Scruggs jumps in Pinellas race versus Welch
Maria Scruggs, a Democrat from St. Petersburg, filed to run against Pinellas County Commissioner Ken Welch on Friday for next year's election.
Late in 2010, Welch pulled his name off the list of potential contenders for St. Pete mayor, and one reason he cited was the expected candidacy of Scruggs against him in 2012 (who previously was known as Scruggs-Weston). She has been a corrections supervisor in Orange County, and mounted a bid last year against businessman Mark Hanisee when he won the vote Pinellas Democratic Party chairman. She also ran unsuccessfully for mayor of St. Petersburg in 2001.
Here's a Times story from that time.
Welch also faces Republican newcomer William "Buck" Walz. The race will be a district contest in southern Pinellas.
