Sharpe pushes for bicycle safety measures
Hillsborough County Commissioner Mark Sharpe is asking county staff to work with bike-safety advocates to craft a gameplan for making local roads safer for people on two wheels.
His request comes in the wake six bicycle deaths in recent months which has added to Florida's overall reputation as an unsafe place for bicycle travel.
Sharpe stopped short of creating a task force, saying he thinks county employees can handle the job. And he didn't give firm direction on what he's expecting, other than to say he expects some mix of education and concrete steps that can be taken along roadways that may cost money.
"This is something that involves us all and we need to see this as an opportunity to take a series of tragedies and turn them into something positive," Sharpe said. Commissioners voted 5-0 in support.
