Sierra Club endorses Saul-Sena, Dingfelder for Hillsborough County Commission

The Sierra Club's Tampa Bay chapter has endorsed Democrats Linda Saul-Sena and John Dingfelder in their runs for the Hillsborough County Commission. The endorsements are certainly no surprise, especially in the case of Saul-Sena. She has been one of the most outspoken elected officials in Hillsborough County for environmental causes. Among other things, she pressed for a ban on nitrogen-based fertilizer use during the rainy season, something the Hillsborough County Commission backed away from. She created a roundtable group to protect the Hillsborough River and helped develop the city's tree ordinance. In 2008, the Sierra Club gave her the Black Bear Award, the Tampa group's highest honor.

The Sierra Club noted Dingfelder's work on the Tampa's green building ordinance, something he's largely responsible for. He's running for the District 1 commission seat against former state Rep. Sandy Murman, a Republican. Saul-Sena is running for the at-large District 5 commission seat against sitting commissioner Ken Hagan, a Republican, and planner Jim Hosler, who is running with no party affiliation.
