St. Petersburg City Council wants more time to examine contracts

When decisions in St. Petersburg involve taxpayers’ money, City Council is demanding time to scrutinize contracts, proposals and reams of paperwork.

Currently, some say, they are not given enough time to examine paperwork before voting on taxpayer-funded projects.
For example, consider the plan to build a new police headquarters. Council voted Thursday to approve a $600,000 land purchase.

Council member Jeff Danner railed against city administrators for giving council paperwork a day before the vote. He said it is impossible formulate questions about projects when he only has a day to examine proposals.

Wengay Newton and Leslie Curran agreed. Danner said he doesn’t want the information by piecemeal.

“I want more time to look at this stuff,” Danner said. “I want to see more bigger picture stuff.”
