St. Petersburg hosts budget forum tonight
ST. PETERSBURG -- Want the city to hire more police officers?
Want Mayor Rick Baker to trim the salaries of the deputy mayors?
Come to tonight's budget hearing at 6 p.m. at City Hall to share your opinion on how the city should spend your tax dollars.
A few discussions to look out for:
City Council member Karl Nurse wants the city to use a projected utility tax increase to establish a grant program toward energy efficiency upgrades for residents. But Baker plans on using that money to honor the city's contracts with union employees, reversing his decision to withhold $2.3 million in raises. Nurse wants Baker to tap into the city's bulging reserves instead.
The St. Petersburg firefighters union also will ask the mayor to use the reserves to keep five firefighters slated for lay offs in the new budget.
City Hall is at 175 Fifth St. N in downtown St. Petersburg.
