State Sen. Crist to run for Hillsborough County Commission in 2012
TAMPA -- State Sen. Victor Crist today filed to run in 2012 for the Hillsborough County Commission seat being vacated by Ken Hagan.
Hagan has filed to fill the seat being vacated by Commissioner Jim Norman, even though Hagan's term doesn't expire until 2012.
The District 2 County Commission seat that Crist wants to fill represents northern Hillsborough County.
Crist, 51, R-Tampa, has been a state legislator since 1990. He first served in the Florida House of Representatives then defeated Kathy Castor in 2000 to become the state senator for District 12, which encompasses northern Hillsborough and central Pasco.
He is serving his final term as a state senator, which ends in 2010.
"I will have 18 years of experience at the Legislature, and I will know how to work that process," Crist said. "I have been successful at bringing stuff home to the district. No one knows the constituents of District 2 better than I do."
Despite his veteran status on the state level, Crist said he knows the place of a freshman official if elected locally.
"I will do whatever is available and whatever needs to be done," he said. "But one thing is for sure, I will continue to look out for the underserved, those that have not had a strong voice at the table and look forward to working on job development, infrastructure improvement, health care, public safety, and affordable housing and community redevelopment."
