Surprise! Mayor Pam Iorio casts vote for transportation tax
Mayor Pam Iorio voted this morning at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in South Tampa. The former Supervisor of Elections said she prefers the excitement of Election Day voting to early or mail-in voting. "Of course I had one special item on the ballot," she said. That's the referendum on a 1-cent sales tax to pay for road improvements, expanded bus service and light rail. It's a big day for Iorio, who launched the discussion of regional light rail four years ago. If voters approve the tax today, it will be the hallmark of her two terms as mayor. In a last-minute pitch, Iorio said the tax is critical to turning around the Hillsborough County economy because it will create jobs and spur private investment in redevelopment. "This is how we're going to build our way out of this economic downturn," she said.
