Susan Latvala: Hackworth quacks like a duck on taxes
She's most recently known for liking backyard chickens, but Republican County Commissioner Susan Latvala has dropped a new piece saying Democratic rival Bob Hackworth "quacks like a duck" when it comes to raising taxes. Indeed it calls him "Tax Quack."
Forget for a moment that Latvala supported new fees to enter parks this year, or voted for property tax increases in 2001 or 2002, or approved utility rate increases this year and last. She pulls from Hackworth's website to suggest he could seek higher taxes on food and beverages, a new tax on businesses, higher gas taxes and a special fire assessment.
"Remember the house in Tennessee that the firefighters watched burn down because the owner hadn't paid the 'fire assessment'?" her mailer arriving Wednesday asks.
"In contrast, while Susan Latvala has been our commissioner, our property tax rate has come down 9 percent!" the mailer exclaims, referring to rate cuts enacted by the board and imposed the state. Hackworth never voted for a tax increase as a Dunedin commissioner or mayor.
(We'll post the mailer as soon as we resolve some technical issues.)
