Tampa City Council to Citizens United: Listen up...
It wasn't exactly a scene from Portlandia, but Tampa City Council members Thursday scheduled a March 15 vote on a resolution calling for a consitutional amendment declaring that corporations are not people and money is not speech.
The proposed amendment to end “corporate personhood” is being promoted in response to the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling that opened the door to unlimited corporate and labor spending in federal elections. It has been endorsed by city councils in New York, Los Angeles and, yes, Portland, Ore., among other places.
“I’ve been wanting to propose this for a while and recently have been getting a lot of requests from e-mails,” said Council member Mary Mulhern, who made the motion. The vote was 5-0, with Charlie Miranda and Lisa Montelione absent.
