Tampa okays surveillance cameras for Republican National Convention, but maybe not after

1

March

Dozens of sophisticated new surveillance cameras are coming to downtown Tampa for the Republican National Convention, but what the city does with them after the crowds leave remains an open question.

The City Council Thursday voted 6-1 to pay Aware Digital $2 million to install a network of surveillance cameras around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, the site of the Aug. 27-30 event. Police have said they want about 60 cameras for the convention.

But council members weren’t ready to embrace letting police continue to use the cameras after the convention without first having a public discussion on a plan. So they scheduled a discussion for Sept. 20 on whether to pass an ordinance that would control how the cameras would be used in the long run.

The city will use funds from a $50 million federal convention security grant to buy the cameras. Full story here.
