Transit tax referendum likely
It's something Mayor Pam Iorio talks up wherever she goes: a referendum on a sales tax to pay for rail and other mass transit needs to go before voters in 2010. It's a road rail supporters have traveled before, only to be blocked by a disinterested Hillsborough County Commission, which has to approve such a ballot measure. Now, two years after Iorio sent a "white paper" to hundreds of lawmakers and business leaders urging them to reconsider rail, it appears the current commission might approve the initiative.
