Union drops bid to organize Dunedin city workers
DUNEDIN - A national labor union has abandoned efforts to organize Dunedin employees.
Until last week, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which spent several months soliciting potential members, was planning a late August election in which Dunedin workers would vote on whether to create a local union.
However, in a letter sent to employees Friday, AFSCME said it had canceled the election after it became "clear that we do not have the momentum necessary to build a strong union at this time."
AFSCME said it will continue to monitor the city's actions and might attempt to organize a union in the future.
