UPDATED: Anonymous, undisclosed report adds wrinkle to Pinellas EMS
CLEARWATER -- After a fairly routine consultant's report on overhauling the spiraling EMS system, County Administrator Bob LaSala threw a wrench in further debate Tuesday by the Pinellas County Commission.
An anonymous, undisclosed report sent to the county had a number of proposals worth reviewing, LaSala said. It was deep enough -- it included a few measures proposed by the consultant -- that staff needed to review it, forcing more discussion to be delayed till May 26. LaSala said the author(s) clearly had some stake and understanding of the report.
LaSala even asked commissioners to sit on the report until his staff gave them their own report on it, though he said news media would want to have the anonymous report quickly. While Commission Chairwoman Susan Latvala agreed to wait for the staff's opinion, Commissioner Norm Roche wanted the anonymous offering a lot sooner.
"I want it in my hands before I read it in the newspaper," Roche said.
After some prompting by the Bay Buzz, LaSala's office provided the 36-page report, which is dated February 2011. Assistant county administrator Moe Freaney couldn't answer questions about how and when LaSala received it, referring a reporter to LaSala who remained in the commission meeting.
LaSala's staff did however, have time to prove a three-page, point by point response.
UPDATE: The anonymous mail "just showed up" at the county administrator's office late last week, dropped off by someone unknown, LaSala said. The staff's comments were a brief compilation of staffers' early notes from it.
