Updated: Green-business consultant enters Tampa City Council race

Green-business consultant Michael Ciftci has filed to run for the citywide District 3 City Council seat. Ciftci, 27, founded the nonprofit United for a Sustainable America, which has sponsored two green-business summits in the Tampa Bay area. He previously worked for the John McCain presidential campaign and as government affairs director for Phillips Development, the company headed by Republican activist Don Phillips. More recently, he was spotted at a get-out-the-vote rally for Democrat Alex Sink the day before she lost her run for governor. Ciftci also got caught up with the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, an organization whose leader has been indicted in Ohio for corruption, theft and money laundering. Read more about that here.

Ciftci will face attorney Seth Nelson and emergecny room physician Jason Wilson in the March elections. Ciftci had this to say about his candidacy: "I am running for City Council to make our Tampa that great American city we've been promised. Jobs and economic development, getting our community back to work, are our top priorities. Also, in an age of budget austerity, developing Tampa's transportation and infrastructure and ensuring our public servants like police, fire and other first responders have the resources necessary to keep the public safe are critical."
