UPDATED: Long ad makes Ahern a puppet
UPDATE: Anthony Pedicini, general consultant to Ahern, sent the following response.
"Janet Long knows she is losing her re-election. She's never faced an opponent as tough as Larry Ahern, and she has no idea what to do. So, like any other incumbent in this climate, she's grasping at straws. The Ahern campaign has strong local fundraising, a great grassroots game, and great ads. Of course the Republican Party is helping their nominee."
State Rep. Janet Long has unleashed a new ad blasting Republican opponent Larry Ahern as a "puppet" of Republicans and special interests in their closely watched race for House District 51. State Republicans are pumping money into Ahern's campaign that otherwise faces a disadvantage on their accounts. State Democrats have yet to pump the same kind of cash into supportin Long, D-Seminole.
"When do I get my party credit card?" the ad purports to show Ahern saying at its close.
Long said Thursday she is fed up with Ahern's attacks on her record. By her campaign's accounting, Republicans have poured more than $400,000 in Ahern's bid, including ads that run on network and cable. Her ad will run on cable, and while state Democrats have assisted her, it hasn't been to the same level.
"What he’s saying apparently resonates," Long said. Does she chalk it up to voter anger?
"I do. We’re all struggling. We’re all worried about where we’re going and the future of his grandkids. But .. who’s in charge there?" she said, making the point that the same people deciding to fund his bid are the ones running Tallahassee "into a ditch."
