Wengay Newton shares stage with Charlie Crist, backs Kendrick Meek
St. Petersburg City Council member Wengay Newton had good words to say about Gov. Charlie Crist after being on stage when Crist announced he would run for Senate as a nonpartisan:
"Charlie's a leader. He's not doing what's right for one political party. He's doing what's best for the state -- like standing up for teachers and keeping oil drilling away from Florida."
Which might have raised eyebrows from people who saw him at Tucson's restaurant on April 17. Newton, a Democrat, emceed a reception for Democrat Kendrick Meek, a candidate in the same Senate race as Crist.

Newton said Monday he still supports Meek and has endorsed him. But Newton said he always shows up when Crist comes to St. Petersburg -- noting a number of events that were mostly less related to political campaigns.
"It's tough for him but hopefully, the independence will help him do good things for the people of Florida," Newton said.
