Wolfe, Newton win awards
ST. PETERSBURG -- The City Council honored two city employees Thursday who recently won statewide awards.
Longtime city attorney John Wolfe was named municipal attorney of the year by the Florida Municipal Attorneys Association. Wolfe has served under nine mayors during his time with the city.
The council also honored city firefighter Winthrop Newton, brother of council member Wengay Newton, who was named the state’s firefighter of the year by Gov. Rick Scott.
“I’m proud of this award — it’s one of the highest I’ve ever received,” he told council. “I still think there’s nothing better than serving mankind.”
