Ybor businessman considers run for Tampa council
Carrie West, owner of a gay-oriented gift shop in Ybor City, is considering a run for Tampa City Council. He sent an e-mail today to family, friends and supporters asking: "Would you like to see me run for the Tampa City Council race in March 2011?" In the e-mail, West says that in 1998 he was the first openly gay candidate to run for the council. "We ran a good race and came in second," he said. Since then, he writes, a lot has changed in Tampa: There are condos and new museums downtown and the crime rate has dropped. But problems, he writes, remain: The city continues to lose tax revenue, unemployment is high, roads are clogged, streets have potholes "and Tampa is not yet a green city. These are just a few things we are challenged with and need to work together on."
