Darden Rice new St. Pete City Council chairwoman
The St. Petersburg City Council provisionally picked its 2017 leadership Thursday.
Darden Rice was elected chairwoman over council member Jim Kennedy by a 5-2 vote. Council member Charlie Gerdes was absent.
Kennedy also lost to Lisa Wheeler-Bowman for vice-chair by a 4-3 vote.
Kennedy has served as chairman since joining the council in 2007. But he won't get another chance at the helm. He's term limited and heading into his final year as council member.
Council members will vote again at their January 5 meeting to make the picks official.
Rice, who was vice-chairwoman, will replace current chairwoman Amy Foster.
Wheeler-Bowman was elected to council in 2015. This is her first leadership post.
Rice, elected in 2013, will preside over council meetings, recognize other council membes who wish to speak and determine the order of the agenda.
