TAMPA — Hillsborough County wants to teach people to stop mixing trash with the recyclables.

It makes recycling more expensives, exposes workers to health risks and damages equipment.

So to figure out how people mistakenly misuse their blue bins, Hillsborough County is calling for residents to fill out a brief survey about their recycling habits.

Do you put styrofoam or batteries in your recycling cart? Do you rinse out food containers before discarding them? And what do you do with all those used plastic grocery bags?

The county will use the information from the survey and focus groups to create an outreach campaign designed to curb bad recycling habits, dubbed “recycling contamination.”

It also would like to remind residents not to bag recyclables and “when in doubt, throw it out.”

Take the survey in English or Spanish here.
