Fact-checking St. Petersburg mayor candidates on Pier funding
St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster and challenger Kathleen Ford argued during Tuesday's Tampa Bay Times/Bay News 9 debate about the payment plan for the Lens. Reporter Julie Kliegman of PolitiFact Florida examined two of their claims for accuracy.
Ford said, "If we use (Tax Increment Financing) funding, that's going to take funds from the general fund for Pinellas County, as it will take funds from the general fund for the city of St. Pete." Her claim implies taxpayers would pay for the Lens with money that could be used elsewhere, which is not correct. Read the story and rating here.
Foster said, "If we don't spend money on a pier, then that money does wipe into the general funds of the city or the county, and if you send it to the county, you never see it again." Read on here.
