Hillsborough Commissioner wants June recognized as LGBT Pride Month
Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin Beckner wants the county to fly a pride flag throughout the month of June in recognition of LGBT Pride Month.
Beckner filed an off-the-agenda item on Monday for Wednesday’s Board of County Commission meeting.
The item requests that staff prepare a resolution that would fly the flag during June each year.
Beckner also wants the county to commemorate June 12 “as a day of reflection and remembrance.” This would include sponsoring an annual candlelight vigil in the Joe Chillura Park or other designated county park or facility.
Omar Mateen, 29, killed 49 people and himself when he attacked an Orlando gay nightclub armed with a semiautomatic rifle and a 9 mm handgun on June 12. The massacre is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
The commission will vote on the resolution during its 9 a.m. meeting Wednesday.
