Immigrants rights groups in Tampa to call for drivers licenses
Advocates of giving drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants are scheduled to hold a news conference at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Lykes Gaslight Square Park, 410 N Franklin St. in downtown Tampa.
As it stands, only the states of Washington and New Mexico allow licenses to be issued to undocumented immigrants, according to organizers with Tampa Dream Defenders. The problem, they say, is that most of those immigrants have to drive to work or school. When pulled over by police, they can face years of incarceration or deportation for not carrying a valid drivers license.
Groups expected to participate in the news conference along with Tampa Dream Defenders include Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society, United We Dream: Tampa Bay, Polk State College Students Working for Equal Rights, Members Empowering True Awareness at the University of South Florida, and the Mexican American Student Alliance.
