Mayor Foster: Midtown Sweetbay to be replaced... by December
Speaking on a panel Tuesday night, St. Pete Mayor Bill Foster said he believes Sweetbay will find a new grocery store to take its vacated Midtown spot before the calendar runs out.
"I know they'r talking to [chains] about this, I know they're in negotiations about this," Foster told about 75 concerned residents at the Enoch Davis Center. "I'm expecting good news at least by the end of the year."
Sweetbay, Foster said, hasn't defaulted on their lease because they're still paying it. That makes the grocery conglomerate hugely invested in finding another company to take their storefront, he said: "They're the most mostivated company because they're paying a lot of money every month."
The year-end timeframe was met mostly with grumbles from St. Pete residents who felt December wasn't soon enough for grocery options in Midtown. They lamented the non-nutritional offerings at the corner stores they've been left with.
