Mike Suarez files to run for re-election to Tampa City Council
Mike Suarez on Friday became the first Tampa City Council member to launch a campaign for re-election.
With voters not going to the polls until March 2015, it's early, but Suarez said he put in his papers now because a friend, Tampa attorney Luis Viera, is organizing a fundraiser for his campaign the evening of Nov. 20 at Mangroves on S Howard Avenue. To be able to have the fundraiser, he needs to be a candidate.
"I'm very happy when people are very enthusiastic about my campaign, and I've always been told by people in politics that you never do anything to tamp down anyone's enthusiasm," he said.
If not for the fundraiser, Suarez guesses he might have wanted until the first or second quarter of next year to file to run for a second term in City Council District 1, which is a citywide seat.
But he acknowledged that it might make sense to get an early start. With Alex Sink running in a special election early next year to replace the late Bill Young and the governor's race coming later in 2014, "there's going to be a lot of people who are going to be asked for a lot of dollars."
