Pinellas tax collector now waiving fees for homeless IDs

Effective today, Pinellas County's tax collector will waive the $6.25 processing fee for homeless state ID cards.

The move follows criticism of Tax Collector Diane Nelson's April declaration that she would take a year to study the request from social service agencies who said the fee hampered homeless people’s access to jobs, housing and more.

Nelson told the Tampa Bay Times that her research shows far fewer people — about 1,500 a year — come in for IDs than originally projected 5,000 annually, meaning less of an impact on her budget.

Jane Walker of Daystar Life Center, a St. Petersburg social service group that has spent $6,250 this year alone assisting the homeless with ID processing fees in addition to bus fare to the tax collector’s office and the cost for required documentation, thanked Nelson for cutting the center’s fees in half.
