Public invited to Dunedin park rededication

Family, friends and residents will gather at 2:30 p.m. Sunday for the official renaming of “John R. Lawrence Pioneer Park.”

The rededication of the 420 Main St. park honors the legacy of Lawrence, who was Dunedin’s longest-serving city manager when he retired in 2006.

He died in August at age 66.

The former friends and colleagues who spearheaded the effort to add Lawrence's name to Pioneer Park said they received support from several citizen advisory boards as well as Vivian Skinner Grant, a former city commissioner whose relatives were early Dunedin settlers.

Revitalizing downtown was among the many accomplishments Lawrence achieved during his 21-year tenure, supporters said, and Pioneer Park is considered the heart of Dunedin's downtown.

"He was a great man who turned this city into a great city," Mayor Dave Eggers said. "When you start looking at all the accomplishments, it really was remarkable and really an easy fit to rename the park."
