Rick Kriseman calls for early voting in St. Petersburg elections

St. Petersburg mayoral candidate Rick Kriseman is calling on Mayor Bill Foster to implement early voting in the coming city elections.

Kriseman will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Wednesday in front of the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections in downtown St. Petersburg. He will be joined by members of the NAACP and other community leaders.

The former City Council member and former state lawmaker is urging Foster and the City Council to allow one week for early voting.

Kriseman, a lawyer, says Florida law gives cities the option to conduct early voting for municipal elections. The right to vote “should not be limited or restricted—it should be easy as possible,” Kriseman said in a news release.

Gainesville and Sarasota also hold early voting in their elections, he said, adding: “There’s no reason we shouldn’t join our friends in other cities in bringing fairness and flexibility to our elections."

The city’s primary election is Aug. 27. Former City Council member Kathleen Ford is also challenging Foster. Paul Congemi and Anthony Cates are also nominal contenders in the race.
