Transit advocates to Hillsborough commissioners: "Walk the walk"
TAMPA--Local transit advocates plan to come to Wednesday's Hillsborough County Commission meeting to tell commissioners to "walk the walk" when it comes to planning for regional transit.
Connect Tampa Bay, an organization founded by a few young professionals to push for more transit options in the area, posted a note on Facebook asking members to show up at Wednesday's meeting by 9:00 a.m. to "tell Hillsborough County to ... walk the walk."
Kevin Thurman, Connect Tampa Bay executive director, said the group is frustrated by the lack of action made by commissioners, who have been meeting for about 10 months with mayors of Hillsborough's three cities and transportation agency heads to discuss transit needs.
"We want to make it clear to commissioners we want them to take action on this stuff and not just punt it down the road," Thurman said in an interview Tuesday. "We want to make it clear to them that there are more people out there who support moving forward on regional transportation planning and solutions ... than there are people against it."
As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, 13 people had indicated they would attend, according to the Facebook event page. Five people said maybe, eight declined, and 169 others been invited but had not yet indicated whether they would attend.
