Naked man strolls out of Jacksonville hotel

Police quickly nabbed a man and took him for mental treatment after he walked out of the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront hotel completely nude, heading in the direction of the St. Johns River.

The fully-bearded man, who police would only say was born in 1983, walked out past the front of the hotel's drop-off area and was near a large decorative fountain when he was spotted by an off-duty officer securing Jaguars owner Shahid Khan's luxury ship, the Florida Times-Union reports.

The officer ordered the man back toward the hotel, where he sat down on a bench and was quickly covered with a blanket. A valet worker said the man was staying at the hotel, though Hyatt security management declined further comment.

When asked what he was doing, the man told police he was “taking a bath,” said officer R.W. Reonas of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. ... Read more

Deputy rescues raccoon with head caught in peanut butter jar

People get their hands caught in the cookie jar all the time, but a raccoon with its head in a peanut butter jar?

That's exactly what Sharon Moyer saw at 6 a.m. Wednesday when she let her two dachshunds go out in the yard.

When her dogs started frantically barking, she went outside and pointed a flashlight toward what looked like a cat, and the light revealed a raccoon cowering with something lodged over its furry face, the St. Augustine Record reports.

“Oh, my gosh, it’s got like a peanut butter jar on its face,” Moyer said. “He was holding for dear life on the fence.”

Moyer tried to give the jar a gentle tug but quickly decided to call in the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office to rescue the critter.

Man in court on a drug paraphernalia charge caught with more drug paraphernalia

BRADENTON -- You would think that a man about to appear before a judge on a drug paraphernalia charge would not bring to court, of all things, drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff's deputies who check visitors for contraband at the Manatee County Judicial Center say a Bradenton man did just that, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports.

Deputies say they found a crack pipe stem on 32-year-old Stanley B. Ramos, of the 5400 block of 18th Street Court West, this morning.

Ramos found himself back in jail on a new drug paraphernalia charge after his court appearance.

Bradenton robbery suspect done in by towel he left behind

BRADENTON — A towel used by a robbery suspect to cover his head gave Manatee County Sheriff's investigators the clue they needed to find him.

Deputies say 36-year-old Terrance Jackson tried to snatch a customer's purse at a convenience store last May. He dragged the victim a short distance because she wouldn't let go of the purse. He finally pulled the purse from her grip and ran out the door. The woman's son ran after him and tried to get the purse back. But the suspect pulled a gun and fled.

The Bradenton Herald reports detectives sent the towel the suspect left behind to a DNA lab for testing. They entered the results in a national database and came up with a match for Jackson. He was arrested Monday in Bradenton.

The newspaper cites an arrest report in which Jackson admitted stealing the purse.
