Stolen ID brought big tuition break

Stealing someone’s identity to qualify for in-state tuition is an interesting idea, but getting the educational record switched to your true identity can be tricky. Especially if, as a teenager, you used a septuagenarian’s Social Security number.

Former Florida Atlantic University student Patricia Brandao, 23, turned herself in after being charged with identity theft, forgery, misrepresentation of academic standing and scheme to defraud, according to PalmBeachPost.com.

The school says Brandao, who is believed to be a native of Brazil, should have paid $51,443 more for her classes at FAU.

School officials found out about the situation when Brandao requested her Social Security number be changed on transcripts she wanted sent to two medical schools. She graduated from FAU in 2006 with a biological sciences degree.
