Mom's death sparks breast milk drive

Tragedy often brings out the best in people. And the death of a mother with a 6-week-old daughter has sparked an unusual drive in the Orlando area, according to OrlandoSentinel.com.

The mother was an avid proponent of breast-feeding, and like-minded mothers have banded together to provide breast milk for baby Sara. At last count, a group of nine mothers had pumped more than 750 ounces for Sara in two weeks. (The average infant consumes between 19 and 35 ounces of breast milk a day.)

Local businesses also joined the drive, donating storage supplies, pumping bottles and even such things as milk dropoff locations. All donors are screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and HTLV. They also can’t smoke, take medications (or illicit drugs) or have had blood transfusion in the past 12 months.
