Raising a stink over human waste pellets

Sludge from the wastewater treatment plant in downtown Pensacola is treated, pasteurized and dried into fertilizer pellets. And the pellets are sold to the Zachary Co., which resells them to sod farms, plant nurseries and golf courses.

However, Zachary normally sells the dried pellets of human waste only to companies in rural areas in other counties. But several weeks ago, Zachary sold a large quantity to a company that stockpiled them in a residential area of Pensacola.

Now some Escambia County residents are raising a stink about the stink (even though the site's owner says the smell is gone), pnj.com reports, and that is threatening the whole enterprise. Escambia County commissioners have told the county to pursue an injunction to stop the owner from stockpiling pellets there. But one commissioner has gone further, wanting to shut down the pellet-making operation because it can’t control where pellets go after they are sold.
