Deer drops in on holiday Publix shoppers

People getting their last-minute holiday groceries at an East Lake Publix got quite a shock Wednesday afternoon.

Just before 1:30 p.m., Pinellas sheriff's deputies responded to a call regarding a deer that ran into the Publix at 500 East Lake Road.

Quick-thinking Publix employees apparently wrangled the animal to the floor. When deputies arrived they were able to further secure the deer by blindfolding it to keep it quiet.

The Suncoast Animal League picked up the deer.

No one was hurt.

According to preliminary reports, the young male deer ran into a glass door of a shop next to Publix, then ran inside the grocery store.
