Homeless man decapitates companion after food dispute, deputies say

SARASOTA COUNTY -- In a fit of anger over spilled food, a homeless man reportedly decapitated one of his companions at their campsite in a wooded area just north of Sarasota early Tuesday, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports.

By mid-morning Tuesday, Sarasota sheriff's deputies had arrested Ricky L. Leer, 48, on a charge of second-degree murder.

Detectives have not yet released the identity of the victim and were attempting to locate his next of kin; his body was found early Tuesday in the homeless camp off Tuttle Avenue.

The victim, Leer and another man all reportedly lived in the woods in the 3100 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, near Tuttle Avenue. They were barbecuing steaks and drinking rum Monday night before the violence broke out.

The surviving witness told detectives that Leer and the victim frequently argued.

Leer became angry with the victim when the grill got knocked over, the man claimed. He told detectives that Leer knocked the victim to the ground and would not let him up.

The man says he saw Leer chop at the victim's head with a machete-like knife.
