It appears less likely that Brett Favre will be on the field playing for the Green Bay Packers this season.

According to a report by Jay Glazer on FOXSports.com, the Packers have determined that Aaron Rodgers will be their starting quarterback and there will be no 'open competition,' as reports have indicated.

Favre met with coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson until about midnight (EDT) to determine what the next step would be.

Favre has expressed his desire to play with a team within the NFC North but the Packers are hoping to find another option.

According to the report, Favre has to decide if he wants to play football for one of the two teams that have continued to show interest -- the Bucs or the Jets.

In fact, McCarthy and Favre met for so long that the coach was unable to attend a scheduled team meeting and chose to cancel his press conference.

Favre might be more agreeable to a trade because he does not want to become a distraction to the Packers locker room. It's still unclear how the episode will end, with Favre being traded, released or remaining retired.

But for the Bucs and the Jets, the Favre saga will continue.

Oh, incidentally, Glazer spent most of Monday visiting Bucs training camp and has a pretty good relationship with general manager Bruce Allen.
