Barber on Bates: It's time for a change
We've been speculating around here about the kinds of changes we'll see in the Bucs defense under new coordinator Jim Bates.
We're not the only ones wondering.
CB Ronde Barber dropped by Super Bowl media headquarters at the convention center today for a Reebok promotional event and stopped to give his take on how the defense might change.
"I don't know much about (Bates)," Barber said. "I've met him twice. I know that some of
the things we do are similar, but most of the things we do are
completely different. We'll be a lot less of a 3-deep team and more of
a quarters, zone-dog team. He's very aggressive –- I know that."
The 2009 Bucs defense could represent a marked change from former coordinator Monte Kiffin's method of bringing pressure only in isolated cases, Barber said.
"Whereas Monte did it occasionally, I think Jim is more apt to get after the quarterback a little bit," he said.
So, if these potential changes are implemented, would Barber be okay with it all? Absoultely.
"I think it's time for a change," he said. "We'll see."
